Dead-eyed insouciance, the metal creature
skims the curb. An elder god
indifferent to we ants – our tiny minds
plagued by the imaginary – begging passage.
On eyelash legs we mark time, ink symbols
on timelines. Tabling our fictions we
face the relentless pursuit of tomorrow
(and tomorrow, and tomorrow).
The ancients, barnacled and clinical,
note the position of the sun, absorb
truths found in the depths of melatonin;
victuals when the light is gone.
